My first full-time job in journalism suddenly became open when I was offered a post with the Globe and Mail. With Sport Canada backing, I had covered the Olympic movement and all of Canada’s amateur teams for two Olympic cycles for UPC, CP, CBC and others. The conversation was witty, informed, uplifting and affectionate. To spend time in their company was a revelation. They were as tight a unit as any family I have seen. Still, I felt up-to-date because Randy talked a lot a lot about Mary and their daughter, Ella.
